Sanitas Hospitales Research Foundation
Sanitas’ entire research tradition is channelled into driving medical innovation, training and disseminating scientific advances to help prevent and treat society’s most prevalent health problems. With support from laboratories such as Roche and GSK, Sanitas promotes clinical studies in areas such as oncology, haematology, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, paediatrics, gynaecology, and mental health. The Foundation is part of REGIC (Network of Clinical Research Management Entities), comprising more than 50 organisations that work to promote and standardise good practices in clinical research.
The ongoing pursuit of new technological, biomedical and clinical solutions to improve patients’ quality of life and advance the treatment of complex diseases has resulted in 121 clinical studies —58 active and 63 under evaluation— being conducted in 2024. These studies span a broad range of medical specialties and are aimed at optimising treatment outcomes.
Sanitas Hospitales also began a collaboration with MIMO, a spin-off from the Centre for Applied Medical Research (CIMA) at the University of Navarra. MIMO develops genetically modified animal models that replicate human cancers (myeloma and lymphoma) for early-phase drug testing.
The Foundation also stood out with 61 scientific publications by Sanitas professionals in 2024, 34 of which ranked in the top quartile by impact. These include a study on cardiovascular disease published in Nature Medicine by Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, and a study on immunotherapy advancements from a trial at Sanitas La Zarzuela University Hospital.
In 2024, all of our centres joined the Research Organisation Registry (ROR), connecting institutions worldwide with researchers and their work. Researchers can now submit proposals via a new digital form.
We also introduced a new governance model at each hospital in 2024 to assess project feasibility prior to review by the Scientific Committee and Board of Trustees.
EcoDisruptive
EcoDisruptive for Healthy Societies is a global internal talent programme run by Bupa, the parent company of Sanitas. It encourages up-and-coming leaders to work alongside start-ups and NGOs to tackle sustainability-related issues. In 2024, the focus was on finding ways to increase access to health and wellbeing services. The six finalist start-ups addressed three key areas: inclusive health, disability support and preventive health.

SANITAS FOUNDATION
For more than two decades, the Sanitas Foundation has been committed to driving social change and equal access to healthcare through research and awareness-raising, inclusive sport to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities, and the promotion of excellence among healthcare professionals.

2nd Inclusive Games
The Sanitas Foundation has focused on breaking down barriers in sport by promoting shared activities between people with and without disabilities and opening up sport to children with disabilities, thereby helping them to enjoy a healthier and better quality of life.

Inclusive sport
Beyond the Inclusive Games, the Sanitas Foundation promotes sport among young people, encouraging them to take it up from an early age. The search for new partnerships and collaborations is driven by the desire to break down barriers in sport and create opportunities for shared activities between people with and without disabilities.
A strategic alliance
Fundación Sanitas is committed to promoting equality in sports through the Strategic Alliance for Inclusive Sports, in partnership with the Spanish Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Spanish Paralympic Committee, the Real Madrid Foundation, the ONCE Foundation, RTVE, Telemadrid, the Regional Government of Madrid, the Madrid City Council and the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Equality in schools
The Inclusive Sports in Education (DIE) programme is based on three pillars: promoting inclusive sports practice in schools; providing information about adapted and Paralympic sports; and raising awareness of the situation of disabled people in sport.
Inclusive championships
The nine inclusive competition sports featured in the Spanish National School Championships (CESA) for Regional Teams are track and field, badminton, wheelchair basketball, cross country, judo, swimming, rugby, table tennis and triathlon. This demonstrates a firm commitment to inclusive sport, supported by the Spanish National Sports Council and both mainstream and disability sports federations.
Football and basketball with the Real Madrid Foundation
Since 2009, the Sanitas and Real Madrid foundations have promoted inclusive basketball camps and football and basketball schools, making sport accessible to all. From 2009 to 2013, 15 editions of the inclusive football and basketball camps were hosted, with 716 participants in total.
In 2024, seven inclusive schools were held, benefiting 141 people.
Power: the strength of sport
The second episode of the Sanitas Foundation’s documentary series Power, entitled The Power of a Dream, highlights the collective push for inclusion and sporting excellence at all levels, including elite competition.
